This one was shot in a white studio, with the overall feel pushed toward hard light, so the set and the subject stay clearly separated. The ratio on him stays strong enough yet still comfortable. The fun part is that we wanted to mimic the flashes going off all over a fashion show. We tested a few approaches before at our own studio, and in the end set up several COB light sources of different outputs all around him, using black flags and black foil to control the spread of each light. We used Blackout to give each one its own intensity and In / Out curve. That let us recreate it in a more realistic way — every reporter and photographer fires at a different moment, and different brands' flashes recycle at different speeds, so the overall rise and fall should feel random rather than mechanical. I'm fairly happy with how it turned out, though it still isn't as convincing as actually firing a set of real flashes. I hope to build a more realistic lighting technique to pull this off down the line.
